Review from the Universal DVD

It was filmed in 6 days for 25 thousand dollars. The government didn't want you to see it. It was banned in 23 states. It has grossed over 600 million dollars. And it is the most profitable film in motion picture history. No it's not E.T., its DEEP THROAT. The sexually explicit film that ignited a social and political firestorm.

More than 30 years after DEEP THROAT's provocative debut, this documentary examines the legacy that the most profitable film of all-time left on society. Narrated by actor Dennis Hopper, we follow the story behind the making of this controversial film, the life of director Gerald Damiano, how the stunning (at the time) Linda Lovelace got involved and Harry Reems who ended up playing the lead and having to deal with much more then he should, Reems was prosecuted for his participation in the movie. Most of the key persons behind the success of the film are interviewed. We also learn that the Mafia was even attached to the movie. Bill Maher, Wes Craven, Hugh Hefner, Marylin Chambers, Annie Sprinkle and others are interviewed throughout the documentary.

Watching some of the comments from people that were against the movie back then made me realize just how primitive some of them were... and this is just a little over 30 years ago! Especially the part where its explained that according to these fools, a woman can't have an orgasm. Well I guess their wife simply didn't enjoyed having sex with them! Jokes aside, I'm glad that today things have "changed". One things for sure is that the whole porn industry has changed the way "normal" people see themselves and sexuality in general. Be sure to get the NC-17 version of INSIDE DEEP THROAT which features some of the hardcore scenes of the movie.

I was born in 1972 so I wasn't directly affected by the release of DEEP THROAT when it first came out. Yet this movie was one of the first porno I saw on homevideo back in the early 1980s. Its is not a good movie or even a sexually exciting one but it sure paved the ways for others.

INSIDE DEEP THROAT cums (sorry I could't resist!) to DVD from Universal Home Video. The documentary is presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio and it is anamorphic. The image looks great, Universal did a fine job even for the old footage and actual scenes of the movie that are in the documentary. The 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track wasn't a necessity with this kind of release but is greatly appreciated. Its clear and crisp and does a fine job. We get 13 featurettes which actually feels more like deleted scenes. Most of them are interesting and worth checking. In "The Zen of DEEP THROAT" various women talk about the movie and their sexuality while Marylin Chambers explains how to do it. "Harry Reems Athletic Club" was another very funny and interesting segment that you should watch. We get an informative and interesting commentary track with the directors, Fenton Bailey & Randy Barbato and the theatrical trailer for the documentary. The film is separated in 20 chapters, features retro animated menus, comes in a keep case with an inlay card featuring other Universal releases.
