Review from the Tartan Video DVD

Prosecutor Kang Cheol-Jung (Sol Kyung-Gu) is without a doubt the most knowledgeable person of his profession. He knows anything and everything, but still he manages to get himself in trouble.

Soon he discover that a number of unsolved crimes are actually linked and all clues leads to an old high school nemesis of his. From there its quickly becomes a personal vendetta in a world of treatchery, lies and corruption.

Kang Wu-seok's 2002 PUBLIC ENEMY was one of the most successful Korean crime thriller ever so it was with much anticipation that I wanted to see this one. This is not a direct sequel to the first movie. The lead as the same name but he is a completely different character.

Well what I got was rathr disapointing. Like most South Korean actionner, this one starts out with a bang but then slow down. The movie sure looks good but at two hours twenty three minutes, its way too long. The story buils itself very slowly as we are treated to many characters and lots of backstories. In the end, its seriously hurts the overall pacing. And its important to note that this is not an action movie.

ANOTHER PUBLIC ENEMY makes its way on DVD from Tartan Video. The movie is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio and its is anamorphic. The movie looks very good with rich colors saturation and strong contrast. Unfortunately, during the fight scene in the club there's a strange blue shadow following most of the characters. Apart from this annoying edge enhancement, there's no complain to make. We get the choice of three audio tracks; DTS, 5.1 Dolby Digital, 2.0 Dolby Digital. All of them are in Korean and for the purpose of this review I listened to the DTS track which was loud, crisp and clear. Optional English or Spanish subtitles are also available.

We get an interesting commentary track with Director Kang Woo-Suk joined by actor Sol Kyung-Gu, Jeong Jun-Ho and Kang Shin-Il. It is available with subtitles. They go behind all the details on the making of the movie. "The Making of Another Public Enemy" is an interesting 35 minutes featurette with many interviews, behind-the-scenes and more. "Behind-the-Scenes: Car Crash" is another featurette (10 minutes), taking a look at one of the key action scene of the movie.

We also get the theatrical trailer for the film along with trailers for other Tartan Video releases such as OLDBOY, SYMPATHY FOR MR.VENGEACE, HEROIC DUO, DOPPELGANGER, H and R-POINT. The movie is separated in 16 chapters, features animated menus, comes in a keep case with a four page booklet. Overall, a nice edition. The movie was also release in South Korea in a two disc special edition.
